Hedging against a recession.

Forum topic seemed apropos,

CtYankee and Athena this is aimed specifically at the two of you. I humbley ask about your opinions concerning the imminent recession the U.S. is facing. I am concerned about my families welfare in the furure. The way this economy is shaping up, I am contemplating what actions I should take to hedge against what is coming down the pike and would like to hear some input from a couple of greener intellects.

An Evolving Plan for "Going Green" in all areas of our home and life

Like so many Americans; we have worked hard for many years
but find our selves in debt without the extra money for the changes we would
like to make in our home and in our lives in our personal effort to go green
and save our planet. Having said that I firmly believe where there is a will
there is a way and we have the will to go green so this effort is part of my
planning the way to succeed in our dream.

You may have seen their toothbrushes or razors in your local health food store. Stoneyfield Farms joined with Recycline and now recycled yogurt cups gain new life as Preserve Toothbrushes. You send back the toothbrushes, and they become park benches.

Energy Star Appliances - save $80 per year in energy cost

The next time you purchase new appliance, please get an energy star rated one! Most dishwashers are energy star rated. Mid level and up refrigeraters, high end topload washers, all frontload washers, many frostfree freezers are energy star. It is so simple to do!

Quote from energystart website:

Did you know that the average home spends about $1,900 on energy costs every year? Change to appliances that have earned the ENERGY STAR, and you can save $80 a year in energy costs, while saving the environment.

Toxic Free Laundry Detergent (NO plastic, too!)

Here is a great dry version of laundry soap:

1 bar Fels Naptha Soap

1/2 c. Washing Soda

1/2 c. Borax

Grate bar of soap. Combine grated soap with soda & borax. Use in place of laundry detergent. it only requires about 1/4 c. per load. VERY good & very inexpensive. You use a food processor to grate the soap.

a Liquid Varation:

Clotheslines

Sometimes to move forward, you must look back. In this case, to the age-old practice of hanging your laundry out to dry. It was one of those ideas I tossed around for a while and, finally, acted upon.

Besides being kinder to the Earth and saving oodles of energy (you can save 700 pounds of carbon dioxide when you air dry your clothes for six months out of the year), clothes dried on lines last longer and smell better, too! Also, for whatever reason, kids just dig hanging the laundry. Bonus!
