Do It Yourself Green Home Improvements

DIYhomepro

Being that the economy is in the dumps and home values are plummeting, we are on the verge of a HUGE green wave in the coming years.

What are most people doing to their homes to prepare for this 'green' invasion? What is the biggest concern people have about their homes and what do they want to learn more about to make their homes more green?

I know that air sealing the home is VERY important for better home energy efficiency.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Do the many easy things first. Check the talk by Ed Begley Jr on low hanging items.

Passive items like using a clothes line instead of a gas or electric dryer

LED lights.

Seal leaks and add insulation.

Use solar screens to block heat in summer, remove them in winter.

Turn the thermostat down in winter and up in summer to be closer to the outside temperature.

add a thermal barrier in the attic.

turn off and unplug electronic devices like TV's when not in use.

when replacing applicances get the smaller and more efficient energy star units, small is better.

walk, bus, car pool use the phone.
